Have you ever bought hamburger buns, and only used four? I have. This past weekend, I was craving hamburgers. So I bought all the ingredients, and only used four buns out of the eight that’s in the package. The buns sat in my pantry waiting for us to use them. Then I had an idea! I’m going to use the remaining buns, and make my famous Grilled Cheese Sandwich for my husband, while he’s in class. It’s famous because my husband, Lee, LOVES when I surprise him with a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. I’ve made him these sandwiches in the middle of the night after having some special beverages, when he was sick, and during the day when I wanted to make him smile. I love doing small things for him. This guy is my universe.
You want to make this famous Grilled Cheese Sandwich? Let me show you how!
You will only need these three ingredients:
- Hamburger Buns
- Cheese (I used the Smoky Bacon Cheddar Cheese Slices)
I’m not going to put an amount on these ingredients because that’s totally up to you. You want more cheese? Do it! You want multiple sandwiches? Freakin’ do it! I promise you can’t mess this recipe up. The only thing you need to avoid is burning the buns. Let’s keep that under control. Ready? Let’s do this!
You’re going to grab a skillet and place it on medium heat. We don’t want to make the pan too hot because the goal is to melt the cheese between the slices of bread. Now you are going to melt some butter in the pan. When the butter is melted, add the slices of bread face down. Or the side where you want to add the cheese.
Wait till it’s golden brown. Like this…
Now we are going to flip the buns over, and add the cheese. Remember, you can use any kind of cheese. Then add the other bun, making the sandwich.
This is important. We are going to add more butter into the pan with the sandwiches.
Wait until the bottom is golden brown. Once it has reached the perfect toastiness, flip the sandwich. And let that side get golden brown. Be patient, and let that cheese melt. When the cheese has melted between the bread slices, it’s time to take it out of the pan. This super simple Grilled Cheese Sandwich will make you dance in the kitchen. I can seriously eat my weight in these things. I shouldn’t brag, but I make a darn good Grilled Cheese Sammy! Go ahead and take a bite!
Grilled Cheese Sandwich
- Hamburger Buns
- Cheese Slices
Preheat skillet over medium heat. Once the pan is hot. Add about a tablespoon of butter into the pan, and let that melt. Now place the buns face down into the melted butter. Leave them for about 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown. Flip them over. Place the slices of cheese on one side of the bun, then add the other bun on top of the cheese. Wait until the bottom slice of bread is golden. Then flip the sandwich over and wait 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown. Serve on your favorite plate! There ya go, my famous Grilled Cheese Sandwich.
The possibilities are endless with these. You can change up the bread, cheese, and/or what’s inside these babies. Make an Italian style Grilled Cheese by using French Bread and mozzarella! And making a marinara dipping sauce to get that pizza flavor. I have even added pepperoni inside the sandwich to give it that extra flavor. If you let your freak flag fly, you won’t be disappointed.
I hope this recipe helps you to get creative in the kitchen, while also giving you some much needed peace in this crazy time. Food is always a sense of home for me, and helps me to reminisce about the times I spent with my Granny in the kitchen. I would watch her make her recipes, and memorize every step she did because I knew I wanted to know how she made things, so I could think about her and get that same feeling I had years ago. The feeling of safety and unconditional love. I miss her daily. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. It’s such a weird feeling knowing she’s not here anymore and I can’t just pick up a phone to talk to her. I know she hears me when I tell her, “I love you.” and “I hope you are having fun in heaven. Tell Jesus hi for me.” Do you have these same feelings? That weird void and almost not believing they’re gone, but you know they are? That’s why I enjoy cooking. I feel closer to my Granny when she’s all the way in heaven. She gave me a sense of security when I was growing up, and I will always be grateful. I’ll write more about my awesome Granny in another blog post. She was a pretty stellar lady!
Let me know if you have lost a loved one, and cooking seems to bring you closer to them. I would love to hear about your stories. Are there dishes that make you super nostalgic for your childhood or times when they were a live? Comment and let me know! I’m always here to listen. 🙂
